Father Returning Home by Dilip Chitre

Theme of the poem

The poem is composed by Dilip Chitre This poem is taken from the collection of poems 'Travelling In a cage. The theme of the poem is man's forced solitude from the man-made world. In the poem, Father is a commuter who has a dull, exhausting daily routine. This routine is also pitiable, for he has to travel inconveniently every day.

He rushes home without bothering about his safety, as he is eager to meet his family.

At home, He gets weak tea and stale chapati. Besides, he is deprived of warmth and affection, particularly from his children. His children, due to lack of concern for him, do not share their joy and sorrows with him.

Hence, he is forced into solitude, away from the man-made world. The poet concludes that the father is not than any tribal wanderer, but he is like a modern nomad.

Theme in Marathi ((मराठी)

(A5) (iii) Write an appreciation of the poem 'Father Returning Home'.

Ans :The poem is composed by Dilip Chitre. The theme of the poem is the father's alienation from the materialistic world. The first stanza of the poem describes the father's pathetic state as he returns home by train in the late evening. Since he hardly ever gets a seat to occupy in the train, most of the time he has to commute standing. His shirts and pants become wet, and his raincoat muddy.

His eyesight has become poor due to age. He rushes home without caring about his safety as he is eager to meet his family.

The second stanza of the poem depicts the treatment he receives at home. Weak tea and stale chapati are served to him. The fact that he contemplates in the toilet implies that he is isolated from the world, especially from his children. Besides, his children never share their feelings without concern for him. Therefore, he listens to static radio while sleeping. Considering himself a modern nomad, he dreams of his ancestors and grandchildren.

The poet uses poetic devices like simile, alliteration, and onomatopoeia.

It is evident from the poem that the suburban middle class father's life is pathetic.

A suburban commuter, who is also a father, experiences painful loneliness through this poem.
